Ridge Hall Reviews

Victoria
Overall, pretty disappointed. Positives very comfortable beds, excellent linens. Great location for a getaway. Negatives property is very run down. Gardens overgrown, weeds everywhere. Cleanliness was a problem, with dust under furniture, and all flooring grimey. Cooking equipment all had to be washed before use. We discovered a problem with rodents in the kitchen. The plumbing requires a full overhaul, as the upstairs toilet drainpipe leaks directly outside the back of the house. We did enjoy our stay, but the tired nature of the property did take the shine off of our family gathering.

Ridge Hall is a perfect place for our family gathering of 11 over three generations. The location is great for activities to suit everyone and the house is loved by the children with its rambling nature and outside space. Plenty of comfortable bed options to keep everyone happy. The aga is great for cooking big meals on, lots of cooking pans, dishes and utensils. Plenty of plates, cups, glasses, cutlery etc meant we never ran out of clean items. Two dishwashers and washing machines also ample for our needs. The furnishings are generally not that clean but we could live with that and a more relaxing space to live in than one that is pristinely clean! The shower in the bathroom above the kitchen eating area does leak a bit so we placed a pan on the floor underneath that to catch most of the drips when shower was being used. WiFi was out of action for first few days but the owner did pursue BT to get it fixed eventually and the 4g signal upstairs was good, less good downstairs. The house is very warm although we did run out of hot water for showers on one day. A very enjoyable holiday, thanyou!
Rebecca
We returned again to Ridge Hall as the house provides such good space for our group to get away together. The house was warm all weekend, despite the cold snowy weather, and we all enjoyed time in front of the fire in the living room. The kids loved the games room, piano and finding great hiding spots for hide and seek! There are some areas of the house that need some TLC and a few other small things that make it feel a little unloved like light bulbs that need changing etc. But overall we had a lovely weekend and enjoyed returning to this house.

Ridge Hall is a labyrinth of rooms & stairs. Its an amazing house for kids to have fun. From a large kitchen to a large dining area a lovely living room to a snug with a piano. This place has something for everyone. The house is warm the water hot. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone looking for somewhere to stop with a large amount of people.
Had a fantastic family get together at Ridge Hall. There is so much space for a large party to relax. We were all really comfortable all weekend.
We spent the Christmas period 23 Dec 29Dec at Ridge Hall and had a fabulous time. There were fourteen in our party age range 5 to 75 years and everyone enjoyed it. It was the perfect place to host a large party. All the rooms were comfortable and warm due to a very efficient heating system. We did light the two fires but only for effect. It's not the easiest of places to find and we found that Google maps was more accurate than Apple maps. If I had any criticism it's that communication with the owner could have been better. All in all we had a great time and would highly recommend it.
Edward
Lovely property, plenty of space for a meet up of friends. Great downstairs area with plenty of different zones and spaces and a lovely large dinner table and great wood stoves. Room configuration upstairs is not typical with rooms off rooms so just make sure it works if you have a sizeable party.

We stayed in the last week in October. It was a lovely, rambling house, surprisingly warm and cosy given its age and size. It provided a great, spacious base for a multigenerational family holiday with ages ranging from 10 to 76. Games room enjoyed, especially by teens. Just needed some tlc in places. Lovely area and we enjoyed several beautiful countryside walks as well as the little train ride into neighbouring Buxton and a visit to Treak Cliff Cavern.

The property is lovely and set in a gorgeous garden. It is comfortable and commodious. It is perfect for a large mixed age group such as ours. Our visit coincided with Storm Amy but it was warm and cosy inside despite the gale and torrential rain outside. It is a little difficult to find, especially as the notice at the top of the final track says no vehicles allowed! However, the directions provided were clear. The following is not part of the review but for your information There were a few issues with the accommodation Positive The beds in the connecting room to the four poster bedroom were singles rather than bunks and were big enough for an adult if necessary. Negative The toilet and shower on the second floor did not work properly One of the beds in that room collapsed when someone sat on it. The door to the Victorian nursery bedroom didn't shut properly and the wall shower wasn't working, A couple of bulbs were out including one of the bedside lights. The kitchen taps dripped all the time
Spacious and suited our multi generational family. Comfortable beds and plenty of seating. Lovely clean and fresh bedding and bathrooms were all good. Kitchen equipment was plentiful but there was a fault with one dishwasheralthough there was another to use, and the large additional oven was problematic in that the door didn't shut without a really hefty shove. Two of the four Aga hotplates weren't working but we managed. There was a problem with the drains which Mark the owner quickly sorted but it only affected using the downstairs loo, but there are 5 others to choose from. Garden space was great for the youngsters to play cricket and the house itself was quirky and interesting.
Patricia
This house was the perfect place for an extended family of 12 to stay in for a week it had lots of character, quirkiness, space & everything we needed. The grandchildren loved it inside and out it was a great place to eat, relax and play. We are a musical family, took instruments & made good use of the piano room. We never tired of playing hide and seek inside and out. We all thought it was the best holiday we had had for years worth every penny and gave us lots of memories we will cherish. Lots of places to visit locally too climbing, walking, caverns, pottery, go ape something for everyone. Owner was easy to contact.
Lovely old hall, needs a bit of tlc but is well equipped and clean. We enjoyed our stay
Judith
What a lovely house in which to spend the weekend with all our children and grandchildren. Every single one of us was delighted with the property. It has so much character that can't be appreciated from just reading about it. There was plenty of catering equipment for our needs and we did a full Sunday lunch with beef and chicken. The beds were very comfy, and the rooms were so much bigger than I expected. Our 4 legged friends most appreciated the dining room floor which remained so cool despite the really warm weather. If you want pristine, soulless newly painted its not for you but for us it was probably the best house we've done a big family weekend in. I'm only sorry we weren't there longer.
Patrick
The property is badly in need of a good refurbishment. The owner had to be contacted after arrival as we had no hot water and even after that the water was never very hot especially after one person had a shower on the top floor shower which stopped if another shower was also run. There is mould around some windows. The ARGA was never at the correct temp for cooking and the extractor fan has 12 inch of dustmuck. Some bedroom firesmoke detectors have been disabled. The main living room wood burner had so much ash it could not be properly lit as there is not fire brush, this should have been cleaned not left as it was. Some flag stones are loose and dargerous. The first issue was the directions which sends you down a track which states no vehicle access and thats the only way to the property. If I was to get a partial refund I would be happier about a cost for the Cottage. I have taken photos of all these issues if you need the proof. The house could be fantastic but needs a lot of work to update.
We were unable to contact the owner in the days before our booking started, and on the day itself. This was both stressful and exhausting. It was only after an hour of waiting in the cold that we eventually managed to in. Phoning Sykes Cottages was also frustrating as we were placed in a queue with wait times getting progressively longer rather than shorter. When the call back option was invoked that yielded no response. When we eventually made contact with Sykes via a devious route not the help line option, all they could do was to try the same number we had for the owner. When we did eventually have contact from the owner all that was offered was that he had been on holiday, followed by a halfhearted apology. Once in, we enjoyed the stay at the property, which was spacious and interesting, and with lovely quiet surroundings. However, we wish that more attention was paid to maintenance, with things like broken door catches, coat hooks, the tray in the dishwasher being repaired. The leaking shower that dripped into the kitchen could also do with some attention.
Andrew
Ridge Hall is an amazing rambling house and garden which provided a fabulous holiday for our three generational family party. Lots of room and rooms, the little ones took a day or two to work out how to find their bedrooms! Huge living room, dining room and a snug for grandchildren and grandparents to get some private time separately!. A good kitchen space with aga and a commercial oven to make meal times for 13 almost a pleasure! And commercial quantities of plates mugs, glasses, cutlery etc. The huge garden was a great bonus for children to let off steam a week of full sun helped as well. Ideally located for day activities to satisfy every generation. Would thoroughly recommend for any family holiday.
We had a great weekend at Ridge Hall celebrating my mums 80th. There were 12 people of us altogether spanning 3 generations aged 1387. The house suited us perfectly, we could all spread out and have our own space whilst also being able to gather around for a family meal in the dining room. The children loved the pool table too. Its a really quirky house, loads of stairs leading in all directions with lots of nooks and crannies. Just to be aware for any future people booking the house is quite isolated. A couple of us did walk ramble to the pub. Its certainly not a flat walk. I am also pleased we had good weather so the roads and lanes to the property were easily accessible. I certainly wouldnt have wanted to negotiate the drive if it had been icy. Other than that. A good stay, great for large groups. Oh and the beds were super comfy with lovely feather duvets.
Our recent stay at Ridge Hall was thoroughly enjoyable. We booked for a group of 16 family and friends for a weekend which involved a 1920s style Murder Mystery, and this house was the perfect setting for it. On arrival we were met by the owner Mark who was very friendly and welcoming. He arrived armed with 2 new pool cues for the snookerpool table, showed us around the house and then left us to enjoy our weekend. The facilities within Ridge Hall and surrounding area meant that there was always something to do during our stay. The large dining table was just right for a big sitdown dinner, and the kitchen was wellequipped to deal with cooking and preparing meals for our group of 16. The sitting room had plenty of space and the logburner made it feel very cosy. The bedrooms were comfortable and spacious, most of which have ensuite bathrooms. The snookerpool table was a great addition as was the games console in the snug. The only negatives would be aimed at the level of cleanliness. Dust and cobwebs were found throughout the house, and some areas where the walls could do with repairing. Having said that, Ridge Hall is an old property and I suppose things like that add to the character and feel. Aside from these minor negatives, Ridge Hall has all you would want for a countryside getaway. It is a lovely big house with plenty of character and I would highly recommend this property. Thank you to Mark and to Sykes, this was a very special weekend enjoyed by all who joined us.
Stephanie
We stayed here with a group of friends and children over new year. We had a fantastic time. The house is very spacious, warm and comfortable, with a well equipped kitchen perfect for large groups. Everyone said how comfy the beds were. Thank you for a great stay!
Jennifer
Brilliant place for a large family gathering. Perfect location and a warm, comfortable stay.
We found the Hall to be spacious and comfortable for our party of ten. The large lounge and dining room were great for our evening get together as a group where we could all eat and socialise as one. The internet was not working on arrival, but I found the owner to be communicative and helpful in getting the problem fixed as soon as possible. The dish washer in the kitchen had a fault but as there was a second machine in the utility room, this was not too much of a problem for our group. We would certainly stay again at this lovely building.
Nicola
A great property. The rooms were much bigger than expected, lovely and spacious and clean. The property had great facilities and although the Aga wasnt working on arrival, the owner supplied a replacement oven and put the heating on, checking in on me throughout the day to make sure it was all working well. Would definitely recommend for a family together. Such a lovely property.
The photos don't do this place justice. It is absolutely perfect for a big group get together or extended families. It is an old house and the layout and features sometimes show this, but honestly we found it charming. Having a massive lounge, dining room, games room and TV room made it easy to accommodate everyone and it would be great for hosting an event like a birthday or something while you are there. Really enjoyed it and the peaceful surroundings, although still close enough to take a walk into town. Great place to stay.
Deborah
Beautiful family home with plenty of space, The bedrooms are large & comfortable. & the bathrooms are also large with plenty of hot water. We enjoyed a family roast for 16 of us cooked on the beautiful old Arga & fan oven, there was plenty of space in the dining room for all. Also loads of seating in the main living rooms. The kids really enjoyed playing hide & seek in this vast house easy to get lost. Lovely garden which also has plenty of seating & some beautiful view. A walk up the lane on a nice evening is well worth it especially for the sunsets. All in all a wonderful stay
A stuning location. The house was well appointed and warm. All in all a lovely weekend.
Beautiful home perfect for a family break. Stunning walks on the doorstep. Highly recommend!
Thomas
Loved this place! The pictures look great, and it's even bigger than it looks! The location is fantastic for walks but also for getting the train to Buxtonother areas.
Rebecca
We had a fabulous weekend at Ridge Hall. The size of the property doesnt quite come across on the listing.. the space meant everyone had the space they needed over the weekend the kids loved the snug and the PlayStation whilst the adult relaxed by the fire in the Lounge. All the bedrooms were a good size and again the photos didnt quite show the actual size of them. Lots of comfy beds and enough showers for everyone! The house was warm all weekend and the lovely Aga in the kitchen meant you could quickly warm up after a wet and windy walk! The old features of the house were amazing and the quirky layout meant there were a few fun games of hide and seek for kids and adults! The location is beautiful and lovely to be able to step out the door and head out for an explore. Having stayed in lots of larger properties this was definitely one of the best! Well definitely be back!
Rochelle
A beautiful house, in a beautiful part of the country. I feel so blessed to have had the pleasure of staying here. My friends joined me to celebrate my birthday. We were greeted by a warm, comfortable, homely yet grand property with much history and original features dating back to the 12th century. The only problem we had was not wanting to leave and that included the dogs too! Great walks, lovely pub, beautiful scenery. A perfect place to stay.
Thuzar
Lovely, homely property and location. A nice hike on the doorstep. Great for kids and we all had a lot of fun chilling and cooking in the property and garden. Slow roasted lamb was amazing in the aga and having two dishwashers was very handy. The only issue was finding the property, in the instructions, I think it should mention, you need to drive down a public footpath where it says no vehicles allowed. Overall, we were all very happy with our mini break at Ridge Hall.
We had a lovely week at Ridge Hall, its the perfect house for a large family holiday. There were 14 people in our group and 3 dogs and there was plenty of space for everyone, both inside and out in the garden. The whole house was very clean, well kept and contained everything you would need when away from home.
Fabulous house, perfect for a large family gathering. Better than the listing made out. Thoroughly recommend
Property listed as having oil central heating but it is a bio mass boiler which didn't work, could not be repaired and as a consequence the building was mostly cold. Warmth was provided by two solid fuel room heaters which needed to be constantly fed with bagged coal dirty to use or wood which was stored nearby and had to be barrowed to the house.
Melanie
Ridge Hall is the perfect location for a big family get together. It has plenty of space not to feel crowded, there were 14 in our group and it never felt anywhere near full! The dining room table was our gathering place and easily sat us all together. The kitchen, with its beautiful Aga, is probably the best equipped for large gatherings weve ever used. Ample fridge and freezer space and every pot, pan and utensil you could need! Lots of space to relax in. Pool table and puzzles appreciated! We were provided with ample logs for the downstairs log burners which kept it lovely and warm in the lounge and dining room. I would suggest that the directions could be a little clearer it is definitely out in the sticks and we ended up at a nearby farm where we were pointed in the right direction!. Also it can get pretty cold in some of the bedrooms typical I guess of an older , rambling house like this. All in all we had a lovely stay and I would recommend.
Jeanette
Our weekend stay at Ridge Hall was perfect for what we wanted space, relaxation, peace and a chance to catch up with family to celebrate a golden wedding anniversary. Our 14 guests ranged from 11 years old up to mid 70s and everyone of us enjoyed every moment. There were plenty of rooms for people to spread out and it never felt like we were on top of each other. The dining table fitted us all round comfortably and there was room to throw a banquet. The whole hall was thoroughly clean and presentable. It was actually better than the pictures made me believe it would be. The beds and towels were spotless. Overall, this was exactly what I wanted for my family and friends and would highly recommend it.
Check in process was frustrating due to significant difficulty in making contact with the owner, who also failed to reply to an email asking some prestay questions. Property clearly has significant through put and is showing signs of wear entrance hall in particular needs a deep clean of tiles and carpet. Description imprecise in that it is not clear that the property forms part of a collection of buildings and the significant amount of surrounding land that is identified is not accessible. Also it should be indicated that the direct access to Chapel en le Frith station indicated in the description is not possible by vehicle 6 of our party arrived with luggage to the station. Instructions for access to the house are unclear and the track leading to the property is not labelled from the road a GPS reference would be useful. Great location for accessing the Peaks, but the property itself did not live up to expectations. PS I am unable to activate the rating for the property on your website
