The Malthouse Reviews

Katherine
I booked The Malthouse for my daughters hen do and we were a party of 15. The house was perfect in many ways, plenty of room, all good sized bedrooms, plenty of bathrooms with a quirky layout. Couple of bits that could do with a bit of attention the oven in the lower ground kitchen did not work properly, the dishwasher in the ground floor kitchen also didnt work very well and there were no recycling options. We arrived at the property just before 4pm and on entering the house it was obvious that someone was inside but they didnt make themselves known to us. I went to find them and introduced myself but the individual did not respond to me and as we were trying to set up for my daughters arrival the individual kept walking through where we were. They were carrying out some repairs but I would have expected them to say hello, explain what they were doing and how long they were going to be. They didnt leave the property until nearly 5.30pm. I think if someone is going to be in the property at a time we had booked it from then you should be informed.
The house was well situated and spacious enough for our whole family of 18. An interesting property. However, there were too many maintenance issues when we arrived. Door bell did not work but we cleaned the contacts and replaced the batteries worked. There was no hot water to the sink in the shared bathroom on the lower ground floor. Maintenance person said he would return to replace tap but didnt. Ground level dishwasher did not work properly. Bottom basket did not fit so sat on spray arm. Water did not get hot. Cooker very slow and gas went out on several occasions one evening. Bedroom 6 shower door did not fit properly so leaked when using rain shower. Door had to be pulled in and other shower head used to prevent this. The standard lamp in the Lounge did not work as plug top had been broken off and earth pin not there dangerous.
Catherine
A lovely house to stay in, quite quirky and with some very steep stairs but lots of character and in an interesting part of the world.
Elaine
A well thought out renovation of a old mill , warm and comfortable, all you need for your stay .

The accommodation was fabulous. Clean, comfortable and well equipped. The welcome pack was lovely and the Christmas decorations made it feel very festive. My whole family were able to share a fantastic Christmas dinner all together which was amazing. Thank you.
Perfect family time in this extraordinary house we loved it! Great location for us close to pubs, shops etc but still wonderfully quiet despite being close to amenities. Wouldnt hesitate to re visit.

Spent a great long weekend here with 14 friends. Very good location. No real complaints. Minor point, the gas cooker grills didn't all work easily. Overall, it more than adequately lived up to expectations...
Alison
Beautiful building, perfect for our large family group. We parked 5 cars easily on the drive and despite being on a busy road there was little noise from the traffic. My grandchildren are already asking when we can go to the cottage again.

The Malthouse is a very well placed and large comfortable Space in the Village of Cromford , the Bedrooms and Bathrooms were very good and functional . The Bedrooms themselves also spacious and well presented . The same could be said about the Lounger areas too. We used the Basement Kitchen to prepare food and we generally found the Kitchen space to be poorly lit and the Utensils Pots and Pans were very old and in some cases unusable as you would simply burn the food . The Basement Kitchen had a faulty oven as the door would not fully close and therefore you could never be sure the food was cooking at the Temperature you required. There was also no surface area cleaning material and ditto a mop for the floor . All of this was quite disappointing as we would prepare Breakfast and an evening Meal there and it wasnt to a standard you would have liked to have kept for a hygiene perspective . There was no apparent system to recycle waste , although there was 1 small Food recycling Bin outside which was filled up after 2 days , not much use. This was a disappointing as we simply had to combine all the waste and we didnt feel good about that aspect of the stay It really wouldnt take much to get these things sorted and all of it relatively low cost to implement . This aspect of the stay was disappointing and we feel Sykes Cottages should be asking the Owner of the site to bring it up to a better standard given the Premium they are asking . A simple visit to Ikea would suffice
Communication was very easy and we found the property excellent for both facilities and location
Catherine
A lovely property suitable for large groups with comfortable bedrooms, sitting areas and lots of kitchens! We were a group of old school chums and it was an ideal venue and situation, within walking distance of good pubs, interesting shops and world heritage site Excellent bus service and on train line too

Issues with lower ground floor shower water handle worn out causing problems to turn on, no lock on lower ground bathroom so spoon had to be used as lock. Health and safety hazardsstairway leading from ground to lower ground had no lights.inner entrance door glass fallen out due to beading not secured. Granite tile left on stone stairway. Premises wasn't cleaned properly. Ground floor kitchen gad large cobweb and worn surfaces very sticky.tv in my bedroom had no network connection.realised that it had no aerial. Overall broadband poor with regular buffering. Upper floor had no hot water or heating. Discovered leaky boiler which led to needing new boiler due to be installed on day we left so parties on that floor and lower ground had to ask permission to use other bathrooms from day 4. Tv remote controlin upper floor living room not working despite buying new batteries. Two leaks detected on upper ground floor during heavy rain. Maintenance had to be called at least 3 times. Bought all this to the attention of the owner when returned home. He replied first time but wasn't empathetic, moaning about cannot predict when a boiler is going to need replacing, dismissing other issues which was clearly ignored and not addressed beforehand. Advised owner that I would send images of some of the issues, which I did along with explanations below. The owner completely ignored the emails and wharsapp images which showed unread 5 days later. Heard nothing from owner since 1st email. Waited until now to reply to feedback, giving owner a chance to respond. Only goid point was comfortable beds. With complaints on a daily basis from my party leading me to have a call maintenance more than once, the owner should have offered some sort of compensation for our stress. I have used sykescottages a few times with no problems so am suprised they have properties in this condition on their books. Suprused gas allowed this property to be rented with all these issues which ruined our 7 day stay which I would be suprised if not reported to them before.
Misleading photographs of outside space as public right of way passing BBQgarden area. Property is by a very busy road & next to a garage with a tyre dump & abandoned cars. Kitchen worktop surfaces sticky due to build up of oil finish.
Shower in bedroom 3 did not work, but apart from that all good.

The property was perfect for my family, we booked the Malta House for a 60th birthday celebration, we wasn't disappointed on arrival from booking information, information booklet had all needed in it, good location, everything we needed for a great weekend Thank you
Brilliant location and accommodation for our family reunion including 16 adults highly recommend this cottage
Wonderful, slightly quirky, big house that hosted a 13 adult family stay with ease. No complaints, loads of crockery, plenty of cereal bowls, all the ovens and dishwashers we used worked fine! Beds very comfortable. You enter on the middle floor which has a hall, two bedrooms, a kitchen and a lounge. There are one or two steps on this floor, I wouldn't say it is wheelchair friendly, but our limited mobility member had no problems at all getting around it. We all managed to squeeze into the lounge for a games night. More bedrooms and a big long kitchen we used for main meal preparation down steepish steps on the lower floor. On the top floor more bedrooms an a big restful lounge and a smaller kitchen. There is also another bedroom accessed by steps from the middle floor lounge. Cromford has many walks, a few good pubs and the mills. Matlock Bath is nearby. Definitely recommend, would be happy to stay at The Malthouse again.
Fabulous property! Furnishings, bedrooms kitchens, bathrooms, dining areas and seating areas brilliant. We were a party of 12 adults, plenty of seats and everything you need in a kitchen but 3 times over. Sometimes looking in all 3 to find what you wanted just added to the fun. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this beautiful listed mill cottage in fact Id say you have to book it to actually appreciate it.
Robert
Lovely place, great location. furnished to a high standard. Only real criticism was that some of the TV's didn't work and some TV remotes looked liked they needed the batteries replacing. Apart from that we had a great stay and would definitely go again
Valerie
We used all the bedrooms and bathrooms as well as all three sitting rooms. It was perfect for our group and everyone remarked how wonderful it was to have for an 80th birthday weekend celebration. It exceeded all my expectations especially as the price for three nights easily fitted into my budget. Our only concern was that the heating appears to revert to the owners preprogrammed 19.5c. We found the various thermostats and reset them slightly higher for a few periods. We all had the most wonderful time including fabulous walks in the area.
What an interesting conversion of an historic building. The longer we stayed the more the care and detail in its realisation became apparent. Once used to where everything was, we used the middle kitchen and diner for breakfast and lunches. The lower kitchen was then used for our main meals. The cooks could work without disturbance. The top floor lounge was perfect for our end of day gatherings. The photos don't do it justice. Certainly don't believe any negative comments. It was a delight and fun to adapt to the conversion. It does work. Everyone in our group liked their rooms, one even described it as the nicest room she had ever stayed in. The prearrival information was really helpful it even included a plan to help us decide which of the twin rooms we wanted as doubles. One quick message to the owner and the heating was adjusted remotely. Impressive. It isn't really a house for anyone disabled although the main stair is wide and soft enabling pretty good access to all floors, and very tall people need to watch for a few Low flying beams. Great location. There are even two brilliant bus routes linking Derby, matlock, haddon hall, bakewell and Buxton. Walk from the house into cromford to find scarthins bookshop, pub and wonderful quirky shops. We were blessed with beautiful autumn weather in November. Yes, we would recommend this house.
Rachel
What a wonderful stay we all had at the Malthouse. Such a lovely setting. There were ample pots, pans, cutlery and dishes etc. I took extra toilet rolls as looked at a few reviews and it was a good shout. The beds were super comfy with lovely fresh linen. The village is a 5 minute walk and some lovely pubs and cafes. We ate at the Greyhound and the food was amazing with speedy service. The owner has been very accomodating and so helpful. We hope to re visit in the future and would definitely recommend.
We had a very enjoyable stay in this great property with lots of room for our family of 15 and many fantastic walks from the house. The two lounges were very comfortable as were the beds. The main problem we felt was that more attention needs to be paid to the kitchens. Three dishwashers and only one worked. Three washing machines but no racks to dry either washing or wet walking gear. An abundance of champagne flutes but only 7 wine glasses and no small glasses suitable for fruit juice or whisky. No working tin opener and only one bottle opener. Only 4 cereal bowls. We seemed to spend endless time going between the three floors to try to locate suitable crockery etc. Surely each kitchen should have the correct amount of crockeryglassware for the number of seats at the table. We had a fabulous time but the lack of care regarding kitchenware really lets this property down and in that respect is the worst we have ever stayed in.
Property was warm, cosy, comfortable, spacious, well equipped, clean. Thank you. A few points to improve customer satisfaction Toilet roll supply was really mean, and we were only 8 sharing a property for 18! Bins are needed in all rooms without en suite facilities. Walking down the corridor with bits of rubbish is not great. We could not find a mopbucket to sponge the floor after a spill in the kitchen. Nor could we find any scissors. Wooden worktops were clean but very sticky from whatever they were sprayed with which was not pleasant. The hand basin in bathroom on top floor was taking a long time to drain, and is potentially shared by 6 people. And also the loo lid needs repairing. Room no 4 also had a loose toilet seat. Bulbs in all lamps not working. Could this be checked before each let? And only one set of keys, in spite of having the key safe, was a little worrying. A spare set would improve customer satisfaction. But our main disappointment was arriving on to a steep hill, pounding with traffic, including lots of lorries, and being shocked that we were not in a more rural setting which was anticipated, given the photos and description. The outside garden and small table down steep stairs would not encourage us to book this property in the summertime. I hope this feedback is helpful. We had a great time anyway, in spite of half a week of incessant rain which clearly you cannot control.
House very quirky in an interesting way Room 5 planks missing from bed, sinking at one end No light fitting in stairs to lower ground very dark, torch required Nowhere near enough toilet rolls Toilet seat not fitting properly in rooms 4 and 6 Grease stain on wall in room 6 Extractor fans in rooms 6 & 9 not working Limited number of cereal bowls When closed, door from lower ground hall to kitchen, latch sticks, difficult to open, needs attention this is a fire escape route Room 3 fabric torn on quilt itself and small stain in mattress General tidy up of surrounding grounds would make the property more attractive.
Arthur
The only reason we have given a slightly lower score on facilities and maintenance is because of the dishwasher issues which I have emailed about separately. This was only an issue because I guess that previous occupants haven't reported things that need looking at.
Sophie
Great house! We were a big group of adults with a few young kids, the house was roomy and well equipped for everyone. Big enough and thick stone walls so noise doesn't carry adults staying up past kids bedtime didn't disturb them!. Very clean and the owners helpfully left washing up liquid, sponges, extra bin bags, dishwasher tablets so we could keep it tidy. The garden needs children to be supervised at all times BUT it's not visible from the house, and only accessible via the front door then a little path, so easy to keep the kids away from it when you need to.
Beautiful house rooms great but small details need sorting eg chipped crockery, general bit of TLC would make it perfect. But our holiday was great
Great house and location for exploring the Peak District. Plenty of rooms to find your own space and big rooms to get together.
We booked the Malthouse to celebrate a friends 60th birthday, and it was great. It is a lovely space, with plenty of room for everyone to spread out, especially liked that we could have double bed configuration for the 7 couples in the group and twins for the 2 other friends. The area itself is lovely, and the weather was kind so we spent most of our time outside by the mill pond, and made full use of the BBQ area. There are plenty of options for walkers, and of course you also have the history trails of Cromford and Arkwrights mills. Can also recommend the Greyhoud for Sunday lunch, would happily stay there again
Stephanie
We stayed for a hen party as a party of 12 so each room was occupied. Made use of all bathrooms which came in handy for such a big party. We all had a lovely stay and appreciated the building and the historic features including the mill. There were a couple of issues, heating on the first night we just couldn't get it to work, however this was sorted promptly by the maintenance guy. The smell on the ground floor from I think bedroom 5 was not very nice I understand it's on water and was a foisty old water smelldrains but maybe you could look at this or a solution. The other thing I think the property could do with some maintenance. We pretty much lived in the top loungekitchen on the first floor. The rug was very old and dated and the sofa was caving in which meant people didn't want to sit on them in case they broke. I think the property could benefit from a big clean however I understand fully it's an oldlarge building and would take some cleaning There is lots of stairs to the property, we certainly got are steps in for the weekend, just wish we had dropped on a warmer weekend! Overall we had a lovely stay and would use the property again for a big party Thank you Steph x
What a beautiful picturesque place. I've never felt so fancy as did staying somewhere that had its own waterfall. The house is beautiful, with lots of space, 16 of us went in total and we never felt like we were all on top of each other or restricted. It's only a 30 minute walk to Matlock Bath which is always a great place to go to. The only thing I would say and it's minor, is there wasn't enough toilet roll, and the work surfaces in the kitchen were sticky like residue had been left on them, but a quick clean round and it was resolved. There was a hook in the ensuite in room 5 behind the door had fallen off the wall, again didn't cause us any issues. The TVs worked which was great for the kids to wind down to, and they loved the trampoline needed a little clean of leaves and debris, but kids aren't bothered by that, outside built in BBQ was a winner! Plenty of plates and cutlery, and just a great all round house. I would absolutely book again and recommend to friends and family
Beautiful house in a beautiful location. The garden was an added bonus. We couldn't believe how large it was inside. Each room was beautiful and the house decor was perfect.
Charles
A most amazing building . good location for walking or exploring the delights of the peak district. An old stone malt house with the mill workings still visible from lower kitchen . A fully stocked house that suited our large part 14 adults . Read the listing to get the house lay out . but three kitchens , many on,suites bedrooms and bathrooms and three lounges aswell. Would work for almost all situations and configurations. We got Six cars parked in front car park quite easy and some parking to rear of property.a great stay and will use again in the future . Charles

The outside space is very sparse and the pictures do not show this, its also on a busy main road which isnt mentioned in the description either apart from that we had a fantastic time and loved not knowing where we had put things in the three kitchens
David Paul
As a group of friends we found the property ideal, though the parking at rear was mostly not available as a large van belonging to the garage was parked there. Because there are 3 kitchens it did involve a bit of looking round for specific items, but not a problem except we never found a sieve. The house being old was interesting especially with the mill workings within it. I think the listing should mention that even within each floor there are several steps up & down, trip hazards for the unwary! Also bedroom 6 has an ensuite which has steps down to it & a low ceiling to avoid. The house was set out well with the owner contacting us in advance to check our requirements for double or twin rooms, towels, teatowels & oven cloths all provided. The only potential disappointment for summer guests may be that the garden is at some distance from the door.. The front door lock is tricky & the doorbell doesn't work, so be prepared to knock loud to get your fellow guests to let you in or ring them We enjoyed our week & especially enjoyed having a spacious house to spread out & relax in.
Katherine
I stayed at the property with friends for my 50th birthday. We have had a great time. The house is beautiful with everything you could possibly need. So much character and little nooks and crannies to explore. We spent most of our time in the first floor sitting room, as it has a kitchen for drinks and snacks. The kitchen on the lower ground floor was perfect for all of us to sit around and eat, the mill wheel window is stunning. Cromford itself is so pretty. I just didn't want to leave, we will definitely be back.
